Curfew imposed after protests in Los Angeles
Los Angeles, June 11 (Hibya) – Mass arrests began after a curfew was imposed due to the protests in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced that the restrictions would apply in city centers from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. local time.
The curfew came into effect as authorities tried to "stop vandalism and looting" in the city.
Bass confirmed a local state of emergency was declared after 23 businesses were looted Monday night, calling it a "turning point."
She stated that the protests caused “significant damage” to property and that there was “graffiti everywhere.”
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell described the curfew as a “necessary measure to protect lives,” citing the escalation of “illegal and dangerous behavior” in recent days.
On Tuesday alone, 197 arrests were made, and police warned that anyone violating the curfew without valid reason would be detained.
Residents, the homeless, commuters, recognized media, and public safety and emergency personnel will be exempt from the curfew.
