Ghebreyesus: Reports of attacks are horrifying
Geneva, June 19 (Hibya) – World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran risks endangering health facilities and access to medical services.
WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus noted that the escalation between Israel and Iran threatens health facilities and access to care, saying, “Reports so far of attacks on health facilities are horrifying.”
He stated that the attack on Israel’s Soroka Medical Center left dozens of patients injured, some seriously.
“250 patients were evacuated to other facilities; the center was damaged and is now only partially operational. Three days ago, following an airstrike on Tehran, three Iranian Red Crescent health workers were reportedly killed while rescuing the wounded. That same day, a hospital in Kermanshah was affected by a nearby explosion, damaging the intensive care unit. Around 15 staff and patients were injured as a result.”
Ghebreyesus said, “We call on all parties to always protect health facilities, medical staff, and patients. The best medicine is peace.”
