Ghebreyesus: Multilateralism is alive, global health solidarity is strengthening
Geneva, May 20 (Hibya) – World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized during the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA78) that in an era where multilateralism and global health are under threat, it is essential to return to core principles.
Dr. Ghebreyesus noted that according to the principles of the Lusaka Agenda, all support provided by the global health community should align with countries’ national priorities.
He stated that holding the World Health Assembly during a time of ongoing global health crisis shows that multilateral cooperation remains strong and that the Pandemic Agreement is close to being approved.
Ghebreyesus added that support for sustainable WHO financing is increasing, highlighting that mandatory contribution increases and Investment Round commitments are contributing to this process.
“We can overcome this crisis and make our organization more functional,” he said, stressing that the focus is on improving health outcomes in countries.
