Luxon meets with Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi
Wellington, April 22, 2026 (Hibya) – New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon commented on his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon emphasized diplomacy and stability during his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
Highlighting the importance of close relationships in challenging global times, Luxon said: “In difficult times, close friendships are more important than ever. That’s why it was good to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi today.”
Referring to developments in the Middle East and their impact on the Indo-Pacific region, Luxon stated: “Conflicts in the Middle East are causing serious humanitarian costs and economic difficulties in the Indo-Pacific. Both sides want diplomacy to succeed and stability to be restored.”
Emphasizing cooperation between the two countries, Luxon said: “Prime Minister Takaichi and I agreed on maintaining open supply chains as part of managing the effects of the Indo-Pacific crisis. Japan is an important fuel supplier for New Zealand and will continue in this role.”
Touching on defense and security relations, Luxon added: “I welcomed the briefing on Japan’s new defense export framework and emphasized that Japan is an important security partner for New Zealand.”
