Kallas: The EU is expanding its sanctions against Iran
Brussels, May 11 (Hibya) - European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas announced that the scope of sanctions will be expanded to ensure the security of energy transport routes amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s actions in the region.
European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas drew attention to the risks that pressure on strategic transit points in the region poses to global security and the economy.
Assessing the latest situation in the Strait of Hormuz, Kallas said, “In the Strait of Hormuz, following Iran’s recent attacks in the region, the ceasefire is under great pressure.”
Referring to the stance of the Iranian administration, Kallas said, “Tehran’s hardline dominance over the world’s most important energy transport route is unsustainable.”
Regarding the diplomatic and economic measures the EU will take in response to this situation, Kallas stated, “The EU is expanding its sanctions against Iran to include those who obstruct freedom of navigation.”
