Disney to open theme park in Abu Dhabi
New York, May 7 (Hibya) – Walt Disney has announced plans to open its first theme park in the Middle East.
The facility will be located on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, through a collaboration between Walt Disney and the local entertainment company Miral.
Disney currently operates six theme parks across North America, Europe, and Asia. The most recent one opened in Shanghai in 2016.
Miral is responsible for developing Yas Island as a tourist destination and already operates SeaWorld and Warner Bros World, as well as developing a Harry Potter-themed park.
In its announcement, Disney noted that the UAE is within four hours’ flight of one-third of the global population, making it “a significant gateway for tourism.”
Each year, 120 million passengers travel through Abu Dhabi and Dubai, making Emirates the world’s largest global aviation hub.
Yas Island spans 25 square kilometers and is located 20 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi and 50 minutes from Dubai.
