The World Health Organization (WHO) shared updated data dated August 28, 2026, on the Ebola outbreak caused by Bundibugyo virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). WHO reported that the Ebola outbreak in the country has spread to 60 health zones.

According to WHO's statement, as of August 26, 5,794 confirmed Ebola cases and 2,786 deaths had been recorded in the country. The case fatality rate was therefore calculated at 48.1 percent.

WHO said that between August 14 and August 26, Ebola cases increased by 1,129, while deaths rose by 602.

It was stated that despite the expansion of surveillance activities, the number of cases and deaths continues to increase. WHO reported that this rise is linked to ongoing transmission and the geographic spread of the disease.

WHO warned that delays in recognizing and detecting Ebola cases increase the risk of transmission.

The statement said these delays raise the risk of further spread of the disease within households, communities and health facilities.

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in cooperation with WHO and other partners, were reported to be continuing to implement and coordinate comprehensive public health measures against the outbreak.

Efforts are focused on areas including disease surveillance, laboratory testing, infection prevention and control, clinical care and community engagement.

WHO said that efforts to detect and track cases, along with strengthening laboratory capacity, infection control, clinical care services and community-based work, are continuing in order to bring the outbreak under control.
