US plan to reduce troop numbers in Germany sparks debate
The United States’ (US) plan to withdraw approximately 5,000 troops stationed in Germany has sparked debate in the country.
According to CCTV, it drew attention that the decision announced by the Pentagon on Friday came after remarks by US President Donald Trump directed at German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
German politician Sevim Dağdelen stated that the move aims to force European countries to increase their military spending, saying: “It is clear that the goal is to push Germany and Europe to invest more in armaments.”
Dağdelen also added: “NATO is a tool used by the United States to maintain its global dominance. Therefore, increasing military spending will not grant Europe real autonomy.”
