Guterres calls for preventing internationalization of the conflict
New York, June 18 (Hibya) – United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the ongoing military escalation between Israel and Iran in the Middle East.
Guterres expressed deep concern over the continued military escalation between Israel and Iran. Reiterating his call for a de-escalation that would lead to a ceasefire, he said: "I strongly urge everyone to prevent further internationalization of the conflict. Any additional military intervention could have tremendous consequences not only for those involved, but for the entire region and for international peace and security as a whole."
Condemning the tragic and unnecessary civilian casualties and injuries, as well as the damage to homes and critical civilian infrastructure, Guterres added: "Diplomacy remains the best and only path to addressing concerns about Iran’s nuclear program and regional security issues. The UN Charter remains our shared framework to save humanity from the scourge of war."
