Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zakharova commented on claims that the United States and Türkiye would supply weapons to Ukraine.

In her August 15 statement, Zakharova claimed that documents published by the US Congress showed that a significant amount of weapons and ammunition was planned to be sent to Ukraine.

Zakharova said the documents listed 12 multiple-launch rocket systems, more than 2,500 unguided cluster munitions for those systems, 47,000 203-millimeter cluster munitions and 70 short-range ATACMS missiles.

Claiming that there were various contradictions and uncertainties surrounding the shipment plan, Zakharova said it was unclear who initiated the weapons re-export project, which route the shipment would take and when the weapons would reach Ukraine.

Zakharova criticized the planning of such a shipment despite statements by the United States and Türkiye that they regard political and diplomatic means as a priority in resolving the Ukraine crisis.

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson argued that sending weapons to Ukraine would not, from Russia’s perspective, change the course of the military operation, while claiming that the shipments would lead to loss of life and destruction and would also damage Russia’s relations with the United States and Türkiye.

Zakharova also claimed that Türkiye had previously given assurances that it would refrain from supplying lethal weapons to Ukraine, saying that such shipments would undermine mutual trust.

The Russian Foreign Ministry was reported to have requested explanations from Washington and Ankara over the information disclosed by the US Congress.

Zakharova called on the parties to make a “cool-headed assessment” of the matter.
