Schoof: The pain of the Enschede tragedy remains fresh after 25 years
Amsterdam, May 13 (Hibya) – Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof issued a written statement on the 25th anniversary of the major fireworks explosion that occurred on May 13, 2000, in the Roombeek district of Enschede, which claimed the lives of 23 people.
Prime Minister Schoof recalled that, as every year, a memorial ceremony was held at the Lasonderbleek Memorial Park to honor the victims of the disaster, saying: “Today, our thoughts are with the victims and their families. For them, the pain is still as deep today as it was then.”
Schoof emphasized that the explosion affected not only the Roombeek neighborhood but the entire city of Enschede, and that the event has maintained its place in the collective memory despite a quarter century having passed.
