Herzog: Courage of heroic fighters is etched in the nation's memory
Jerusalem, October 30 (Hibya) - Israeli President Isaac Herzog commemorated those killed and wounded during the Suez operation in a message marking its 70th anniversary. Herzog argued that the 1956 operation had significant consequences for Israel's security policy and international relations.
Herzog stated that the operation, carried out eight years after Israel's establishment, was intended to end fedayeen attacks and secure the country's borders. "Together, we declared to the world: We are here, and we will remain here forever," he said.
Herzog noted that the operation brought what he described as significant achievements, as well as special alliances and a serious international crisis. He argued that then-Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion transformed the results into a prolonged period of relative security. Herzog said this period allowed the young state to develop and grow stronger, continuing until the Six-Day War in 1967.
Recalling that 70 years had passed since the operation, Herzog said, "We will never forget the courage of the fighters and commanders who fought heroic battles, those who lost their lives, and those who were wounded physically or psychologically. The passing years do not ease the pain of our losses or erase the memory of our heroes."
Addressing the families of fallen soldiers, Herzog said, "Today, I want to tell the families who lost their loved ones in the Sinai Campaign: Your loved ones are our loved ones, too. Their courage is etched in the heart of the nation, and their legacy will continue to accompany us from generation to generation." Herzog concluded his message by commemorating those who lost their lives.
