Guterres: A comprehensive ceasefire in Lebanon must be the first step toward lasting peace
Brussels, June 11 (Hibya) - United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have escalated significantly since March and called on the parties to seek a diplomatic solution.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that Israel has intensified its operations on Lebanese territory, while Hezbollah has carried out attacks deeper inside Israel. He stressed that all parties must work toward a diplomatic solution that fully respects Lebanon’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and political independence.
Noting that he supports the principle that the Lebanese government should be the sole authority over weapons, Guterres stated that the process should begin with a comprehensive ceasefire implemented everywhere by all parties.
Guterres said, “This process must begin with a comprehensive ceasefire that will ease the suffering of communities on both sides of the Blue Line and be respected by all parties.”
