EU Commissioner Kos warns Serbia on judiciary and press freedom
Brussels, March 18 (Hibya) - European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated during a meeting with the President of the Serbian National Assembly Ana Brnabic that developments regarding judicial independence in the country are concerning.
Kos drew attention to the recent steps taken by the Serbian authorities to limit the independence of the judiciary and stated that the implementation of the new judicial laws should be suspended until the Venice Commission issues its opinion. She also expressed the expectation that these laws would be revised in line with the Commission’s assessment.
EU Commissioner Kos also conveyed to Brnabic that it is being assessed whether Serbia meets the necessary conditions for payments under European Union financial instruments.
Kos also called for an end to pressure on civil society organizations and journalists.
