European Union (EU) Council President Antonio Costa said that development is connected to human rights, dignity, freedom and people's capacity to shape their own futures.

Costa said that sustainable development, democracy, good governance, the rule of law and respect for human rights are interconnected, adding, “They reinforce one another and all must be given equal importance.”

Costa emphasized that these principles, adopted forty years ago, remain valid today, saying, “Today, these principles remain as relevant as ever.”

In this context, Costa said, “We call on all UN Member States to remain focused on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.”
