Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced the passing of renowned film producer Luiz Carlos Barreto, one of the leading figures in Brazilian cinema.

Lula said Barreto had been one of Brazil's most important film producers over the past 50 years and declared three days of official mourning in recognition of his contributions to Brazilian culture.

The statement noted that Barreto had played a significant role in Brazilian cinema since the Cinema Novo movement of the 1960s, contributed to the production of numerous successful films, and supported the development of public policies for the audiovisual sector.

At the end of his statement, Lula extended his condolences to Barreto's wife Lucy Barreto, his children Paula and Bruno Barreto, as well as his family and loved ones.
