Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei delivered sharp criticism of France in a social media post. Baqaei claimed that hypocrisy is a deeply rooted problem in French political culture and referred to Molière’s famous work “Tartuffe” in making his point.

Arguing that France remained silent during attacks on Iranian cities, Baqaei stated that civilians lost their lives in several cities, including Minab, Tehran, Lamerd, and Isfahan. He also alleged that French officials were not only silent but complicit in the attacks.

The Iranian spokesperson claimed that the French government raises human rights issues only when political interests are at stake, describing Paris’s approach to human rights as a “selective conscience.”

In his statement, Baqaei said: “The hallmark of French political culture is hypocrisy. You remained silent while Iranian cities were bombed and innocent Iranians were killed. Yet today, when it serves your political interests, you suddenly seek to lecture the world on human rights. What a great Tartuffe (hypocrite)!”
