After Trump's speech, the dollar index dropped
Istanbul, February 25 (Hibya) - The dollar index dropped below 97.8 after US President Donald Trump gave no indication of changes in customs duties policies during his State of the Union address.
In his speech, Trump expressed confidence that foreign countries would meet their trade agreements and suggested that, eventually, customs duties could replace income taxes. The US began temporarily applying a 10% global tariff on Tuesday.
According to reports, after the Supreme Court's decision to cancel Trump's reciprocal tariffs, the administration aims to raise this rate to 15%.
On the monetary policy front, US Senator Susan Collins stated that, given the improvement in the labor market and ongoing inflation risks, it would be appropriate to keep interest rates unchanged, while Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) member Thomas Barkin added that the policy is well-positioned to manage economic risks.
However, markets continue to price in expectations that the Federal Reserve (Fed) will cut interest rates by 25 basis points approximately three times this year.
