In a statement marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Nepal, attention was drawn to the historical development of bilateral relations and the areas of cooperation between the two countries.

The statement noted that July 20, 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Nepal, adding that the relations established in 1956 were built on the principles of mutual respect, sensitivity to each other's interests and trust.

It emphasized that relations between Russia and Nepal have traditionally been friendly and that cooperation between the two countries has contributed to sustainable development and security goals in South Asia.

The statement also noted that contacts between the two peoples date back to the second half of the 19th century and highlighted the significant studies on the region's language and culture carried out by Russian orientalist Ivan Minayev during his visit to Nepal.

According to the statement, relations became even stronger during the 20th century, and the peoples of both countries shared common experiences in the struggle against Nazi Germany and Japanese militarism during the Second World War.

It was further stated that diplomatic relations were established at a time when Nepal was becoming more active internationally, and that during the Soviet era, support was provided for Nepal's economic development and infrastructure projects.

With Russia's support, manufacturing facilities, an agricultural machinery factory, a hydroelectric power plant, hospitals and roads were built in Nepal. The statement also noted that around 6,000 Nepalese citizens received higher education at universities in the Soviet Union and Russia.

It added that Russia's assistance to Nepal was provided entirely free of charge.

The statement also referred to Russia's humanitarian assistance following the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015, noting that Russia dispatched rescue teams, medical personnel and humanitarian aid supplies.

It further stated that Russia contributed to the adoption of a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for urgent assistance to Nepal.

According to the statement, political dialogue between Russia and Nepal continues today, while trade, economic and cultural cooperation keeps expanding.

Moscow views Nepal as a valuable and independent partner pursuing a balanced foreign policy and staying outside geopolitical confrontations, the statement said.

It also recalled that during a meeting with Nepalese Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli on September 1, 2025, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that there had never been any problems between the two countries and that their positions largely coincide on major international issues.

Putin also emphasized the importance of further developing cooperation in the fields of education and culture.
