Jetten: We want a modern budget with realistic financing
Brussels, June 19 (Hibya) - Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten criticized the European Union’s (EU) new Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) budget proposal on the second day of the European Council summit, emphasizing that the budget should focus on the future rather than the past.
Referring to the budget negotiations taking place at the EU leaders’ summit and the Netherlands’ fiscal position in this process, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten stated that the current proposal falls short of addressing today’s priorities.
Noting that the issues on the agenda directly affect the prosperity, well-being, and security of all Europeans, Jetten said: “Day 2 of the European Council: The agenda includes issues that affect the prosperity, well-being, and security of all Europeans.”
Jetten added: “How will we finance this in the coming years? In the current negotiation proposal for the new Multiannual Financial Framework, key priorities of today such as competitiveness, innovation, and defense are being overlooked.”
Clearly outlining the Netherlands’ expectations regarding budget discipline and reforms, Jetten concluded: “From the Netherlands’ perspective, this means turning the world upside down: a budget is made for the future, not for the past. The Netherlands does not want a higher bill for worse results. We want a modern budget with realistic financing. This requires greater balance and a focus on the right priorities.”
